Levi Reinhold
Backstory
Levi was born to a Sharlyan researcher and his wife in the city that would later become Idyllshire. Levi’s father, a viera man named Vaal, was a researcher of the void. His mother, Eiel, was a half-lupine half-viera woman, and held strong to the ways of her ancestors. In an attempt to keep him connected to his lineage, his mother trained him in the ways of her people. While this was usually the charge of the father, Vaal was useless in a fight.Vaal worked alongside another man in his research, a highborn man from the city of Ishgard. The man's name was Seymour of House Reinhold, and he would invite the viera family to stay with him while he and Vaal continued their combined research.Seymour, unlike Vaal, was much more... consumed by the void and the secrets it held. Sometime in his youth, he came into contact with a powerful voidsent and made a contract with it. The voidsent possessed the ability to see into the future, promising secrets untold if Seymour followed it's instructions and did what it wanted. Granting the man it's power, Seymour soon went mad and began to conduct blasphemous experiments in secret. When Levi was around the age of 5, Seymour staged his abduction and fled into the Hinterlands. There, he would begin his experiments on the boy, knowing through his future sight and the whispered words of the voidsent that Levi held powers of old within him. Over the course of the next 5 years, Seymour would slowly begin the process of morphing Levi into a void-bound creature. Part of this process was grafting parts of a voidsent to the boy, replacing his heart and even a portion of his very soul with that of the void creature. The other part of this process was forcing Levi through rigorous tests in hopes to force certain mutations, like increased strength and durability.5 years after his abduction, and before Seymour could fully change the boy, Dark Knights raided his facility and rescued Levi, destroying the lab in the process. Sadly, the Knights could not dispatch the mad man before he could escape, but they were able to return Levi to his family, who had recently become the inheritors of the Reinhold name and Manor. While they were beyond happy to have their son back, Vaal and Eiel knew he had been changed. Levi was angry and violent, snapping at the lightest provocation. They didn't know how to help him, so in hopes to acclimate him to normalcy once again, they enrolled him in the Knight Academy.Years passed, and while the time helped him some, Levi could not form any sort of connection or bond with his fellow trainees, the horrors he had been through forming a wall between him and "normal" people. It didn't help that he was still quick to anger and would start fights at the drop of a hat, both physically and emotionally wounding his fellows. Despite all his problems and the amount of trouble he caused, he still passed his classes and became a knight proper... somehow.During his time in the academy, Levi had become a full blown zealot, finding some small comfort in the Fury and the churches teachings. Even if he was a mongrel in their eyes.
He was given the chance to take on the Trial of the Dragoon very early on his career, only being 16 at the time. Whether it was because he had truly proven himself, or because the High Clergy wanted him gone didn't matter to him, he would prove his fealty to Halone and the city of Ishgard.Days after being sent on his trial, Levi returned, dragging with him the head of a dragon, much to the dismay of the Clergy. Forced by tradition, they commenced with ritual and granted the young knight a Soul Crystal and a Lance. Though he was now part of the most prestigious knights in Ishgard, this would not stop the clergy from trying to make him disappear, constantly sending him on lone suicide missions. Yet he persevered, returning from each and every one.It was during one of these missions that Levi would awaken his gift, rousing the ancient soul that he held.
He was on patrol when a horde of Dragonkind ambushed him. Seeing no way out, Levi literally leapt into action, skewering the beasts left and right. But with every dragon that fell, two more would be in it's place. Not even a Dragoon could survive these odds...Then it happened. The voice of the Mothercrystal pierced his mind."Hear. Feel. Think."Suddenly, Levi's senses were overloaded with information as they connected with all the aether around him. It took a moment to adjust to the stimuli, but when he finally did, he could see... everything. With this new found Gift, Levi would ward off the dragons with devastating blows from on high, nearly rivalling the current Azure Dragoon himself, though he would never get the chance until years later...In the short years that followed in the awakening of his gift, Levi would be haunted by long forgotten memories, driving a wedge between him and his family. He even became disillusioned with the church and his fellow knights, finally growing tired of the angry glares and constant death missions. At age 19, his life would drastically change. While off duty, he found a group of clergy men acting suspicious in the Brume. Following them, Levi was appalled at what he had found. The men of the cloth were doing unspeakable things to the people there, using their "Divine Right" as an excuse for such atrocities.
Without a second thought, Levi skewered the men with his lance, leaving naught but ash and blood in his wake. After seeing the people he had saved to safety, Levi was spotted by his fellow knights and forced to flee before they put him to the sword. That was when he was approached by a man in blackened armour and offered a sword."If you wish to see the place you so dearly call home freed from it's cancer, you must be the one to purge it. It will be a lonely and thorn filled path, but the people will be better for it. What do you say?"Seeing no other option, and wanted to strike back at the people who constantly threatened his way of life, Levi accepted without a second thought. The man, who he would learn was called Frey, was right. The path was a solemn one, but it was something he was used to. At least this time, he had the company of his fellow Dark Knights. There was a problem though. The void creature side of himself began to grow restless, fuelled by his constant use of his inner wrath and desires. This would all come to a head on his 21st nameday, merely 2 years after starting his path, that he would lose all control. He had wanted to return home to see his family, but found nothing but flames and smoke. In his with the Dark Knights, Levi's tormentor had returned. Seymour spent many days whispering lies of heresy and plots against Ishgard from the Reinhold house to those of the Clergy. Finally having enough reason to be rid of the outsiders and constant thorns in their side, the High Clergy razed the house to the ground. With Levi's family inside.Levi snapped, flying into a blind rage. Metal sung and heads rolled. In the midst of the battle, Levi -out of some sort of instinct- bit one of the men, accidentally forcing his final mutation and fully awakening his more... vampiric side. Now unburdened, Levi continued his slaughter, tearing the remaining men apart with ease.He now stood alone, the mess of gore and viscera accompanying him and his burning home. Before he could be given a moment to mourn -if it was still possible for him to do so-, Seymour appeared. He began to ramble on about his grand plan and how Levi would make the perfect pawn for his Lord. But the newly awakened dhampir didn't care, tearing out his creator's throat like he did with others. The burgeoning monstrosity then fled the scene, the final bits of his humanity not wanting his scourge to spread further into the city.Levi would continue to terrorize Ishgard and her Knights while hid amongst the snowy fields. Whole squadrons would fall to his sword, and neither man nor dragon would be safe from him. Such destruction and terror would continue for 3 years, the trail of death only stopping when he was caught by his fellow Dark Knights.Their battle was fierce and long, and had it not been for Fray reciting a voidsent binding spell that Seymour had crafted some time ago, both he and Sidrugu would have fallen at the hands of their friend. When his senses came back to him, Levi was alone. All that remained of his battle against his comrades was a lone sword. It's blade shined with a golden hue, much like the brands that now covered Levi's body. With only a hazy memory of what had happened, the Knight took up the sword and left Ishgard completely, hiding himself amongst the foliage of the Shroud, where he would meet the Scions of the Seventh Dawn years later and begin his journey as the Warrior of Light properly.
